CHICOPEE, MA, April 14, 2008 - The New England Collegiate
Conference (NECC) announced the hiring of Del Malloy as its
first-ever commissioner on Monday, April 14.
Malloy, who has served as Director of Athletics at Salve Regina
University since August of 1997, brings more than 20 years of
collegiate athletic administrative experience to his new role as
NECC Commissioner.
"We are extremely pleased that Del Malloy will be the NECC's
first commissioner," stated NECC director of athletics chair,
Louise McCleary. "His experiences as a successful coach,
administrator and Division III leader will only enhance the growth
of our newly formed conference."
During his 10-plus years at Salve Regina, Malloy oversaw the
construction of a $10 million indoor athletic facility and
rebuilding of the University's athletic fields and courts. He also
managed the department's overall budget and helped develop and
implement a strategic plan that doubled the number of full-time
employees during that time.
In his new role with the NECC, Malloy will serve as the chief
administrative officer of the conference responsible for day-to-day
operations, act as liaison between the Presidents and Directors of
Athletics, administer, interpret, and enforce NCAA and NECC
policies and regulations.
He will also assist with the development and maintenance of the
NECC budget and financial records, develop a conference schedule,
oversee the sports information function of the conference,
including the NECC website, and represent the conference at
regional and national meetings and events.
"It is an honor to serve as the first full-time Commissioner of
the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC). I look forward to
working with the presidents and athletics department staffs at
these fine institutions to make the NECC an outstanding
conference for the student athletes."
Malloy is currently in a three-year appointment on the NCAA
Management Council, and will serve as council chair during the
2008-09 academic year.
His other NCAA committee service has included work with
student-athlete reinstatement, membership, national student athlete
advisory committee, playing and practice seasons, championships,
infractions appeals, women and minority internships, regional and
national leadership conferences; convention planning; president's
council; executive committee and marketing.
Prior to Salve Regina, Malloy was the Associate Director of
Athletics and Head Women's Basketball Coach at Wheaton College from
1984-1997. During his time at Wheaton, he also served stints as
head women's cross country coach (1980-85), head softball coach
(1982-88), men and women's cross country coach (1988-95) and men's
golf coach (1989-93)
Malloy earned his bachelor's degree in Management from Johnson
& Wales University in 1972 and his master's degree in secondary
school administration from Bridgewater State College in 1995.
