Mariners Lose Tough One to Albertus Magnus in Baseball
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball team lost in a slug-fest today to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus, 14-11. Shortstop Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn.) went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored, and Jared Bishop (Moodus, Conn.) was also perfect going 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI in the loss for the Mariners.
The host Mariners came out swinging as they scored five runs in the first inning. Perillo hit a double, and then Mitchell got three consecutive singles from John McGarry (Waterford, Conn.), Bishop, and Andy Langlais (Ledyard, Conn.).
The Falcons would score two runs in the fourth to close the Mitchell lead to 7-3, and then scored two in the seventh. Robert Bengivengo (Oxford, Conn.) hit a two RBI double in the fourth, and Kyle Calechman (North Haven, Conn.) hit a two run homer in the seventh inning.
Albertus stormed back in the top of the eighth inning, as they scored seven runs. The rally consisted of five walks, a double by John Stavola (Berlin, Conn.), and a home run by Peter Rogan (Middletown, Conn.).
Mitchell came right back in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored three runs to cut the deficit to one run, 12-11. James Gleason hit a two RBI single during the rally and three Mariners walked to fill the bases.
Albertus added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to seal their first victory of the season. Dan Doria (West Haven, Conn.) picked up the win, and Paul Martinez (New London, Conn.) took the loss.
The Mariners, 3-8, play again on Saturday, April 28 when they travel to Elms College for their first NECC match-up of the season.
