Baruch College Rolls Past Mariners in Baseball CUNY Action

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball team had a rough day on the diamond today, as they fell twice to CUNY conference foe Baruch College, 20-8 and 21-4.  Baruch's offense exploded for 41 runs and 41 hits, and the Mariners made 12 errors on the day.

In game one, the Bearcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning on singles by Benjamin Riofrio (Queens, N.Y.), Arturo Ledesma (Yonkers, N.Y.) and a two-run home run by Jorge Rosado (Bronx, N.Y.).  The Mariners fought back and scored two runs in the third inning on a home run by Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn.).

Baruch would blow the game open in the fifth inning, as they scored seven runs and took a 16-5 advantage.  Marcos Mejia (Miami, Fla.) and Ledesma each doubled in the inning, and four other Bearcats singled.

On the mound, Kellin Bliss (Catskill, N.Y.) went the distance and picked up the win on nine hits, eight runs, and seven strikeouts.  Mitchell used four different hurlers, and Andrew Langlais picked up the loss.

Game two was also a high-scoring affair, as the Bearcats would score eight runs in the first four innings of play to Mitchell's three.  And then they again had a huge fifth inning, when they scored 10 runs, including a grand slam home run by Thomas Daly (Valley Stream, N.Y.).

Mitchell started the game strongly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a triple by Paul Martinez (New London, Conn.) and singles by Perillo and Langlais.  But the Mariners were unable to score again until the bottom of the sixth inning, when they scored one final run.

Three Mariners shared the pitching duties in game two, and Martinez was credited with the loss.  He pitched four innings and yielded eight runs on six hits and four walks.

David Chestnut (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went the distance in game two, as the game was called after the sixth inning, and earned the win.  He gave up eight hits, four runs in six innings of work.

Matt Hagan (Boulder, Colo.) was 5-for-9 at the plate for Mitchell and drove in two runs and had five put-outs from his position in centerfield.

Mitchell is now 4-14 overall and 2-4 in CUNY play, and they are back in action on Saturday when they host NECC opponent Daniel Webster College at noon.
