ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Mitchell College junior Eddie Santiago was named New England Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week for the sport of baseball, as announced by the league on Monday morning.
Santiago threw 7.0 scoreless innings to protect a one-run lead as the Mariners came away with a 1-0 victory over Newbury College on the opening day of NECC play. He scattered five hits and struck out a career-high nine batters to record his first win as a conference starter. The outing was the longest of his career and marked the first shutout and complete game for the lefty.
Santiago, who earned the award for the first time in his career, becomes the third Mitchell pitcher honored by the league this spring. Teammates Axel De Jesus and Bryton Ferris were recognized on March 6 and February 27, respectively.
Mitchell (7-5 overall, 1-1 NECC) will next host Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, March 21 at 3:30 p.m.
