Mitchell Men Lose Road Game to Albertus Magnus
NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Mitchell College men's basketball team suffered a 93-71 defeat on Tuesday night to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus. Eric Murray (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored 20 points for the second time this season in the losing effort and added six rebounds. Fellow post player Pat Nielsen (Norwalk, Conn.) scored 14 points, while senior guard Josh Witt (New London, Conn.) contributed 10 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals.
The game was a back and forth battle for the first 10 minutes of play, as the score was tied seven different times. Albertus Magnus used an 11-1 run to take a 10 point lead with 8:01 remaining in the first half. The Falcons increased their first half lead and went into the intermission with a comfortable 16 point advantage. The host team pumped up their lead in the second half by as many as 30 points.
Albertus had four players score in double figures and two players registered double-doubles. The Falcons were led by Ray Askew (Hamden, Conn.) with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and senior Bobby Leonzo (East Haven, Conn.) had the other double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Senior forward Francisco Cordova (Windsor, Conn.) chipped in 11 points, and Matt Maya (Bridgeport, Conn.) rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points.
The loss drops Mitchell to 1-3 on the season, and the Falcons improve to 2-3. The Mariners return to action on Friday, December 5th when they travel to Eastern Nazarene College for the Crusader Classic Tournament.
