Becker Defeats Mitchell Men During Pink Out Game
NEW LONDON, CONN. - The Mariners were defeated by Becker College 84-59 on Thursday evening during a "Pink Out" event held at Mitchell. The Hawks were led to victory by Travis Suber (Springfield, Mass.) with 23 points and eight rebounds. Mitchell was led by Eric Murray (Bridgeport, Conn.) with 25 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.
The Hawks jumped out to an early seven point lead at the 16:41 mark in the first half, and they would increase their lead to 13 points with just over eight minutes to play in the first half. Mitchell would cut the lead down to four points with 2:31 left before intermission on a made free throw by Matt Bindner (Milford, Conn.). But Becker used a 8-0 run, including a running jumper at the buzzer by Suber to close the half leading 46-34.
The Hawks used a balanced scoring attack throughout the second half and pushed their lead to 21 with 14:41 remaining in the game. A lay-up by Victor DelRosario (Springfield, Mass.) put the game out of reach with just over five minutes to play.
For the Mariners, Jenel Russell (East Hampton, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points and nine boards. The Mariners were out-rebounded in the contest by a 41-24 margin. The visiting Hawks also capitalized on Mitchell's 26 turnovers.
Also scoring in double-figures for Becker was Rajai Leggett (New Haven, Conn.) with 16 points, Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, Md.) with 13 points, and Terrance Favors with 12 points.
The loss drops Mitchell to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the NECC. The Mariners are back in action on Saturday, January 24th when they host Lesley University at 3pm.
The Mitchell College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), in conjunction with the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), is promoting breast cancer awareness at three home basketball games in January. The SAAC will sponsor the "Pink Out" events at the following home basketball games: January 22nd men vs. Becker College at 7pm, January 24th women vs. Wheelock College at 1pm and men vs. Lesley University at 3pm, and January 29th women vs. Elms College at 7pm.
The basketball teams will be wearing pink warm-up shirts and sweat bands, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the games. Mitchell College Athletics pink t-shirts are on sale and will be available through January in the athletic department for $10. All proceeds from the t-shirt sales will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
