Men's Tennis Beats Newbury in Season Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Mitchell College men's tennis team opened the 2010 season with a 9-0 victory over Newbury College on Saturday afternoon.

The Mariners began the match by sweeping the doubles portion to go up 3-0. Mitchell then won all six singles matches, only one of which went to a third set.

Sophomore Kyle Carmona, the reigning NECC Player of the Yeark, picked up where he left off. He crusied to victory at at No. 1 singles and teamed with freshman Rocco Devona for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Devona played at No. 2 singles and won in his collegiate debut by a 6-1, 6-3 final.

Andrew Small dropped the first set at No. 3 singles but rebounded for 6-4, 6-4 decisions to take the win. Adam Samuels, Chris White and Alamin Ripon all took care of their singles matches in straight sets. Samuels and White teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-3 victory while Small and Ripon didn't drop a game at No. 3 in an 8-0 rout.

The Mariners, who went 8-0 in the NECC last season, improved to 1-0 in conference play. The loss dropped the Nighthawks to 0-1 in the conference and 0-3 overall.

Mitchell returns to action at home against Post on Thursday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m.
