Men's Tennis Blanks Post 9-0

WATERFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College men’s tennis team swept every match in a 9-0 victory over Post University on Thursday afternoon at Leary Park.

The match began with the Mariners (2-0 overall) taking all three doubles points. Sophomore Kyle Carmona and freshman Rocco Devona defeated Post’s Caio Rodriguez and Muamer Ahmetovic at the No. 1 position by an 8-5 final. The other two matches weren’t nearly as close, with senior Chris White and sophomore Andrew Small teaming up to win 8-1 at the No. 2 spot and junior Adam Samuels and freshman Alamin Ripon grabbing an 8-2 win at No. 3.

Mitchell’s dominance carried over into singles play, with only one match going into a third set. Carmona set the tone at the top spot, securing a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rodriguez to get the ball rolling. Devona didn’t lose a game at the No. 2 spot, beating Ahmetovic by 6-0, 6-0 scores. White also cruised to victory by finals of 6-1, 6-1 over Markeese McLeod at No. 3.

The day’s closest match came between Small and Andrew Oliveira at the No. 4 position. Small dropped the first set 3-6 but rallied back for 6-1, 6-2 decisions to secure the win. Samuels and Ripon completed the shutout at No. 5 and No. 6, the former defeating Tyrone Napper 6-0, 6-1 and the latter taking down Frantzy Noze 6-2, 6-0.

The Eagles dropped to 1-5 overall on the season.

Mitchell returns to action in a conference match-up against Lesley University on Saturday, April 3 at Leary Park. The contest is scheduled to begin at noon.
