Softball Drops Two to Coast Guard Academy
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Coast Guard Academy today, 5-0, 4-0. The pitching staff for the Bears held the Mariner batters to two hits in the first game and five in the second game.
In game one, Coast Guard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, when they got singles from Jeannie Crump (Roseville, Calif.) and Colleen Denny (Clarence City, N.Y.) and a double from Maddie Buchert (Metaire, La.) In the third inning, Crump and Courtney Wolf (Fredericksburg, Virg.) both homered to give the Bears a 4-0 advantage.
Mitchell was held to two hits, singles by Liz Roy (Jewett City, Conn.) and Brittany Zaccaria (White Plains, N.Y.). Hayley Feindel (River Ridge, La.) went the distance for Coast Guard and struck out 10, walked three, and picked up the win. Kristina Torres (Groton, Conn.) pitched for Mitchell and gave up five runs on nine hits while striking out four.
Game two started just as game one did, with Coast Guard grabbing a 2-0 lead on a single by Crump and a double by Buchert. The Bears would string three more hits together in the second inning for a 4-0 lead. Mitchell fought back and loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, but were unable to capitalize. Five different Mariners singled in game two, but the team could not convert the hits into runs. Lindsey Donelin (Niantic, Conn.), Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn.), Michelle Anderson (Scotland, Conn.), Brittany O'Neil (Old Saybrook, Conn.), and Jen Bordonaro (Winsted, Conn.) all contributed with a single apiece. Nicole Black (Stafford, Virg.) picked up the win for the Bears, as she pitched five innings, gave up four hits and fanned six.
Marissa Thomas (New London, Conn.) took the loss on the mound for the Mariners, as she gave up four runs on 11 hits. Mitchell is now 5-8-1 overall and 3-0-1 in NECC play, and they are back on the diamond on Wednesday, April 1st at 3:00pm against Johnson & Wales.
