Softball Takes Two From Albertus Magnus
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team got
back on the winning track on Wednesday afternoon with 8-0 and 10-4
victories over Albertus Magnus College.
Mitchell (14-8 overall) finished with seven hits in each game and
improved to 12-0 on its home field. Albertus Magnus dropped to 0-24
overall but matched a season high with four runs in the second
game.
Game 1 – Mitchell 8, Albertus Magnus 0 (5
innings)
Sophomore pitcher Kristina Torres notched her second shutout of the
season, allowing only three hits over 5.0 innings while striking
out seven and walking none. She improved to 6-5 overall.
The Mariners scored the only run they would need in the first
inning when junior Jen
Bordonaro reached base on an error and later scored on a wild
pitch. Mitchell added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by
senior Kelly Reynolds that scored classmate Sara
Krolikowski.
Mitchell put the game away with a six-run fifth inning to invoke
the mercy rule. Freshman Meghan
Burke started the scoring spree with a double that plated two
runs, and sophomore Marissa
Thomas later followed with an RBI single. Torres finished the
rally with a single that brought home to final two runs.
Catherine Sieff made the start for the Falcons and gave up eight
runs (one earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings. She also struck out
five and walked two in the loss. Maritza Rosemond had two of the
three hits for Albertus Magnus.
Game 2 – Mitchell 10, Albertus Magnus 4
Thomas took the ball in the circle for the Mariners and improved to
8-3 overall on the season. She gave up four runs (three earned) on
eight hits and struck out six in 7.0 innings.
Mitchell took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Krolikowski
scored on a wild pitch. The Mariners added three runs in the third
behind RBI singles from Burke, Krolikowski and Reynolds to increase
the margin to 4-0.
The Falcons struck back with four runs in the fifth inning to tie
things up. Bria Szymanski put Albertus Magnus on the board with a
double that scored two runs, and Samantha Gigliotti followed with
an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Falcons tied the game
on a ground out by DJ Figueroa that scored Gigliotti from
third.
The Mariners promptly responded with six runs in their half of the
fifth. Both Thomas and sophomore Nikki
Hoxie each singled in a pair of runs in the frame as Mitchell
went back in front 10-4.
Sieff got the starting nod again for the Falcons and gave up 10
runs (four earned) on seven hits. She struck out eight and walked
three in 6.0 innings of work.
Mitchell returns to action at Elms College on Saturday, April 17 at
2 p.m.
