Women Lose to Dominican at Saint Joseph Tip-Off Tournament
WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - The Mariners lost to Dominican College (Illinois), 69-53, in opening round play at the Saint Joseph College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening. Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) led the team in scoring with 16 points, while freshman post player, Destiney Harris (Bristol, Conn.), registered a double-double with 10 rebounds and 11 points. Freshman guard, Bianca Young (Bridgeport, Conn.), also turned in a strong performance in the loss with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
The first half was a back and forth battle, until the Stars from Dominican pulled away using a 16-2 run mid-way through the second half. Dominican was led by forward Jessica Salinas (Bolingbrook, Ill.) who had a game-high 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Lindsey Trent (Frankfort, Ind.) joined Salinas in double-digit scoring with 18 points, and she also had eight assists and five rebounds on the night. The Stars used accurate shooting (58.2% field goal percentage) and a 47-34 rebounding advantage to advance to the Championship game on Saturday.
Mitchell returns to action on Saturday at 1:00pm when they will face either the host Saint Joseph Blue Jays or SUNY Old Westbury in the consolation game.
