Mitchell Women Close Out Semester with Loss to MCLA
NEW LONDON, CONN. - The Mitchell women closed out the first semester with a home loss to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 93-78, on Wednesday evening. The Mariners had four players score in double digits, but it was not enough to stop the Trailblazers of MCLA. Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) led Mitchell with 18 points and also dished out five assists.
For MCLA, 6'0" post player Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y.) had a huge game scoring 25 points, hauling in 15 rebounds, and blocking five shots. Sophomore guard Laura Silverman (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) also contributed with 13 points and nine boards. The Trailblazers out-rebounded the Mariners by a 58-34 margin, and as a team shot 45 % from the floor.
Mitchell battled throughout the first half and had a two point lead with 9:44 remaining until the intermission. MCLA used a 19-8 run to take an 11 point lead with 2:33 left in the first half, and they would never look back. The lead would swell to as much as 26 points midway through the second half, when Mitchell put together an 11-2 run to close the gap. In that span, Iglesias hit two three pointers, and Alix O'Neil (New London, Conn.) made a lay-up and a free throw.
Allison Peck (Colchester, Conn.) and O'Neil each scored 15 points, and freshman Bianca Young (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 10 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. For MCLA, Molly Broda (Southampton, Mass.) and Ali Leveille (Southampton, Mass.) joined Wehner and Silverman in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Mitchell drops to 1-6 on the season, and they are not back in action until January 10th when they host Daniel Webster College. The Trailblazers improve to 6-2, and they are back on the hard wood on January 2, 2009 at the Keene State Tournament.
