Women Fall to Host at Saint Joseph College Tip-Off Tournament
WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - Mitchell fell to Saint Joseph College, 82-73, in the consolation game at the Saint Joseph College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) led the team in scoring with 21 points, and also had five rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard, Bianca Young (Bridgeport, Conn.), had another strong all-around game with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. Also scoring in double-digits for the Mariners was Alix O'Neil (New London, Conn.) with 10 points and eight boards.
The game was a hard-fought battle which saw the lead change hands many times, and the score was tied 20 different times in the 40 minute ballgame. St. Joseph was led by sophomore guard Ilaria Schiano (Wallingford, Conn.) with a game-high 29 points and eight rebounds. Backcourt teammate, Nathalie Mastarreno (Glastonbury, Conn.) turned in an impressive triple-double performance with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. The Blue Jays also got a strong performance from Samantha Royce (Portland, Conn.) with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The halftime score was 28-25 in favor of the host, but Mitchell battled through the second half to find themselves tied with 1:46 left to play. The Blue Jays were able to secure the win with two big three-pointers and 4-4 free throw shooting down the stretch.
Mitchell returns to action on Thursday, December 4 at 7:00pm when they will face Saint Joseph College again for the second time in two weeks.
