Mariners Defeat Nighthawks in NECC Match-up
BROOKLINE, MASS. - Mitchell College picked up another NECC win against Newbury College today in Brookline, MA, 91-43. The Mariners' Allison Peck (Colchester, CT / Bacon Academy) led the way as she connected on six three-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points.
The match-up looked to be a battle in the starting minutes of the game as both teams would go basket for basket before the Mariners pulled away on key three point shooting from Peck and Jennifer Iglesias (Waterbury, CT / Sacred Heart). As the teams headed into the locker room, Mitchell would take a 20 point advantage backed behind 60% shooting from behind the arc.
The second half would prove to be much of the same as the Mariners would run away with the game. First-year center Destiney Harris (Bristol, CT / Bristol Eastern High School ) continued to dominate in the NECC as she would just miss a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds, while teammate Iglesias finished with 14 and fellow guards Brittany Smyth (Winsted, CT / The Gilbert School), Alix O'Neil (New London, CT / New London High School) and Biance Young (Bridgeport, CT / Kolbe Cathedral High School) chipped in nine a piece.
Despite the loss, the Nighthawks' Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while Kendra Bannister (Stafford, VA/ Brook Point) and Morganna Machado (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) finished with nine and eight points, respectively.
The Mariners are back on the hardwood on Tuesday when they host Lesley University at 7:00 pm.
