Mariners Romp Wheelock College in Womens Hoops During Pink Out Game
NEW LONDON, CONN. - The Mariners rolled to a 79-37 win over Wheelock College on Saturday afternoon during a "Pink Out" event held at Mitchell College. Mitchell was led by freshman center Destiney Harris who just missed recording another double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Tania Gee (West Haven, Conn.) hit a three-pointer at the 10:05 mark in the first half to give Mitchell a 18-6 lead. The Mariners would never trail in the game from that point forward, and they built an 18 point lead at the intermission. In the second half, the host team would lead by as many as 44 points on their way to their fifth NECC win.
Along with Harris, four other Mitchell players scored in double digits. Allison Peck (Colchester, Conn.) scored 13 points, and both Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) and Bianca Young (Bridgeport, Conn.) would contribute with 12 points. Brittany Smyth (Winsted, Conn.) netted 11 points and also pulled down six boards.
Wheelock was led by sophomore guard Joy Holliday (Milford, Mass.) who scored eight points in the loss.
The win improves Mitchell's record to 6-7 overall and 5-0 in the NECC. The Mariners are back in action on Tuesday, January 27th when they travel to Lesley University.
The Mitchell College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), in conjunction with the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), is promoting breast cancer awareness at three home basketball games in January.
