NEW LONDON, Conn. – Regis College came away with a 21-3 victory over Mitchell College in a New England Collegiate Conference women's lacrosse match on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Sam Salamone led the Pride with five goals and an assist on the day, one of four Regis players who scored three or more goals in the contest. Teresa Busiek (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) finished with four goals while Abbie Wehr and Sashae Walls each added three. Mitchell freshman Ashley Murtha provided all the offense for the Mariners with three goals.
Salamone gave Regis the lead just 32 seconds into the contest, the first of four first-half goals for the Pride's leading scorer. Regis scored six goals in the opening five minutes and led 8-0 before Murtha finally got the Mariners on the scoreboard with 17:37 left in the half.
Salamone's final goal of the first half came on a free position shot with 10:06 to play, giving the Pride an 11-1 lead. However, a pair of goals by Murtha in the final 7:16 of the stanza cut the deficit to 11-3 at the break.
Regis held the Mitchell offense to only one shot in the second half. The Pride continued to pepper the goal on their offensive end, outscoring Mitchell by a 10-0 margin over the final 30 minutes. Salamone potted her fifth goal early in the half, and nine different players scored for Regis in the period.
The Pride dominated in draw controls by a 21-5 margin and outshot the Mariners 34-7. Regis goalie Emma Decker finished with one save while Anysia Lombardo and Jaleesa Peeples split time in goal for Mitchell. Lombardo made three saves in the first half while Peeples recorded four in the second.
Mitchell will next host the University of Saint Joseph on Thursday, March 27 at 4 p.m. Regis returns to action at home against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Thursday, April 3 at 5 p.m.
