BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Mitchell College softball team pounded out 33 runs and 36 hits in a doubleheader sweep at Southern Vermont College on Sunday afternoon at Willow Park.
The Mariners (11-13 overall, 8-2 NECC) won the first game 12-3 in six innings before posting a 21-0 victory in five innings in the finale. Pitchers Marissa Thomas and Tricia Tomaselli each picked up wins on the day, and every player in the Mitchell starting lineup finished with at least a hit and an RBI in the doubleheader.
Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Wednesday, April 18 at 3 p.m.
Game 1 - Mitchell 12, Southern Vermont 3 (6 innings)
Mitchell sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the first inning to set the tone early. Senior Brittany Zaccaria had a pair of RBI singles in the frame while classmate Stacey Suplicki had a single and a double to drive in three.
Southern Vermont scored single runs in the first and fourth innings and then extended the game with its final run in the fifth. The Mariners plated two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double by freshman Dylan Riccardi, and Thomas worked a scoreless sixth to end the game early due to the eight-run rule.
Thomas evened her record at 7-7 on the season and posted her sixth win in conference play. She allowed three runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings and struck out five while walking three.
Game 2 - Mitchell 21, Southern Vermont 0 (5 innings)
The Mitchell offense erupted for 21 runs over the first four innings to complete the sweep. Tomaselli did her part inside the circle, notching her first shutout of the season while allowing only five hits. She also struck out four and walked only one batter to improve to 3-6 on the season.
Junior Tiffany Person and freshman Lindsey Romagnino each homered in the first inning to get things started. Junior Meghan Burke also added an RBI single in the frame while a double by Riccardi plated another run to give the Mariners a 5-0 lead.
The Mariners kept things rolling by scoring six runs in both the second and third innings before hanging up a four spot in the fourth. Person, Zaccaria and Romagnino all finished with three hits and two RBI in the game, and Burke contributed two hits while driving in three runs.
