Williams Named 2020 Wilbur Baratz Recipient
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Mitchell College graduate Hasani Williams was selected as the male recipient of the 2020 Wilbur Baratz Award, as announced by the Department of Athletics on Tuesday afternoon during its virtual awards ceremony.
The Wilbur Baratz Award is given annually to the man and woman considered the best all-around athlete in the varsity sports program. It was established in memory of Mr. Baratz (an avid tennis player) by his widow.
Williams was a four-year member of the men's basketball team who played in 106 games while making 104 starts, both of which are school records. He was a two-time all-conference selection who earned first team status in his final season, averaging team highs of 15.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He ranks fourth all-time at the school with 1,497 career points, and his 899 career rebounds are the third-most in program history. He helped lead the Mariners to back-to-back New England Collegiate Conference title game appearances, including a championship and NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2019.
The 2020 Mitchell Athletics Banquet was canceled in May due to COVID-19. While the original goal was to reschedule the event before the end of the year, the decision was made to shift the award ceremony to a virtual setting for the safety of all involved. All award recipients were determined by a vote of the coaches and staff in the department.
