Men’s Basketball Loses Season-Opening Thriller at Manhattanville
PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team opened its 2025–26 campaign with a hard-fought 77–74 road loss at Manhattanville University on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gymnasium.
After trailing by 10 at the half (38–28), the Mariners battled back behind a strong second-half surge but came up just short in the closing seconds.
Senior forward Brandon Lee (Stockton, Calif.) led Mitchell with 15 points and 9 rebounds, while junior Troy Butler (Manchester, Conn.) added 14 points, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Sophomore Matthew Carter (Corinth, Texas) provided a spark off the bench with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and fellow sophomore Abdul Mansaray (Jacksonville, Fla.) contributed 12 points and 7 boards.
Down 38–28 at intermission, the Mariners erupted for 46 second-half points, clawing their way back to take a 72–71 lead on a Zaveyn Tate (Bristol, Conn.) layup with 47 seconds left. Manhattanville responded immediately with a go-ahead basket from Andrew Saint-Louis, and two late free throws sealed the 77–74 final.
Mitchell shot 47.5% from the field and 62% (18-for-29) from the foul line. Manhattanville was paced by Saint-Louis and Isiah Middleton, who scored 24 points each.
The Mariners (0-1, 0-0 GNAC) continue their early non-conference slate with a game at Dean College on Wednesday, November 12, at 6:00 p.m.
