NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Mitchell College men's basketball team came up short in the opening game of the Cadet-Mariner Classic against Westfield State, falling 85–79 at the Yarnall Athletic Center in non-conference action on Friday evening.
Junior guard Troy Butler (Manchester, Conn.) led the Mariners with 32 points, including four three-pointers in 40 minutes. Fellow senior David Stallworth (Stockton, Calif.) added 12 points on 4-7 shooting, sophomore Abdul Mansaray (Jacksonville, Fla.) had 10 points and 6 rebounds, and senior Brandon Lee (Stockton, Cali.) chipped in 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a pair of steals.
For Westfield State, A.Z. Allah scored a game-high 29 points, while Kenney Rogers added 17 points and 17 rebounds, Xavier Lewis contributed 15 points, and Jason James added 10 points.
Mitchell shot 43.5% from the field and hit eight three-pointers but couldn't overcome Westfield State's efficiency and rebounding, as the Owls used their size to win the battle of the boards 42-33.
The Mariners (1-4, 0-0 GNAC) will battle CCNY on Saturday, November 22, at the Coast Guard Academy in the second day of the Cadet-Mariner Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
