Men’s Basketball Fights Back but Falls Short at Colby-Sawyer
NEW LONDON, N.H. — Facing a 28-point halftime deficit, the Mitchell College men's basketball team mounted a furious second-half comeback before ultimately falling, 93–90, to Colby-Sawyer College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
After trailing 46–22 at the break, the Mariners erupted for 68 second-half points, trimming the deficit to a single possession in the closing seconds.
Junior Troy Butler (Manchester, Conn.) led the charge with 16 points in the second half, while sophomore Tommy Daly (Wethersfield, Conn.) added 14 after the break as Mitchell applied consistent pressure in transition and attacked the rim.
Mitchell shot 38 percent from the field (25-of-66) and went 32-of-43 from the free throw line, forcing 16 Colby-Sawyer turnovers that fueled the comeback effort. The Mariners also received a strong lift from the bench, which accounted for 41 points on the afternoon.
Despite the late rally, Colby-Sawyer maintained its advantage behind efficient shooting, connecting on 51 percent from the floor and holding on at the free throw line down the stretch to secure the win.
Sean Peterson paced the Chargers with a game-high 20 points, while four other Colby-Sawyer players scored in double figures.
The Mariners (6-13, 2-5 GNAC) return home following a three-game road trip to face Dean College in a GNAC showdown on Tuesday, February 3, at 7:00 p.m.
