NEWPORT, R.I. – The Mitchell College softball team saw their four game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday evening, suffering a pair of non-conference losses to Salve Regina University at Toppa Field.
The Mariners were edged by the Seahawks 1-0 in the opener and 5-0 in the second game, dropping the Mariners record to 7-11 on the season.
The Mariners (7-11, 4-0 GNAC) will look to stay unbeaten in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play when they visit Saint Joseph's College (ME) for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13th. The Seahawks (7-13, 2-4 NEWMAC) return to play when they face Emerson on the road on Friday, April 12th.

The opener of this non-conference game was a pitching duel, as Mitchell senior Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville Conn.) and Alex Kelly of Salve matched each other across five scoreless frames,
Freshman Emily Cronin snapped the scoreless tie with a double to left-center in the bottom of the sixth, scoring junior Emily Lane, to give the Seahawks the eventual winning run.
Kelly, a junior, improved to 3-5 on the season after tossing a complete game two-hitter, walking just one and striking out nine.
Lipsky surrendered just one run in six innings of work, while juniors Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) and Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) were the lone Mariners to record a hit.
Game 2 – Salve 5, Mitchell 0
After a pair of scorless frames to open up the second game of the twin bill, Salve plated three runs in the bottom of the third when Emma Plourde drove home a run on a groundout, and Sam Franceschi and Kylie Lanteri followed that up with back to back RBI singles up the middle.
That proved more than enough offensive support for starting pitcher Caroline Peterson, who improved her record to 3-2 by tossing a seven inning complete game two-hitter, walking three and striking out three.
The Seahawks added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single to centerfield off the bat of Katie Ramos.
Mitchell junior Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) was charged with the loss after surrendering five runs (three earned) across six innings of work.
Senior Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn.) and Brooke Whitmarsh were the lone Mariners to record a base hit, while sophomore Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) reached back twice with a pair of walks.
Sam Franceschi finished 2-4 with one RBI and a run scored in the win for Salve.
