Softball Splits on Second Day in Myrtle Beach
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Mitchell College softball team picked up its first win of the season on Monday, splitting a non-conference doubleheader at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
In the opener, the Mariners pounded out 18 runs on 12 hits to rout Penn State Scranton, 18–3, before narrowly falling to Penn State Altoona, 6–5, in extra innings.
The Mariners (1–3, 0–0 GNAC) will have an off day on Tuesday before returning to the diamond on Wednesday, March 11, to continue their spring break swing with games against New Jersey City University and Penn State Harrisburg.
Game 1 – Mitchell 18, PSU Scranton 3
The Mariners wasted little time getting on the board, plating a run in the first inning when freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) scored on a wild pitch. Mitchell added three more in the second, highlighted by an RBI single from senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) that brought home junior Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) and freshman Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.).
Mitchell broke the game open with a nine-run third inning, taking advantage of timely hitting and several Penn State Scranton miscues to extend the lead to 13–0. Drouin delivered a two-run single during the rally, while senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) added a sacrifice fly and junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) followed with an RBI single.
The Mariners continued the offensive surge in the fourth, scoring five more runs. Freshman Tess Frager (Saco, Maine) and junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Calif.) each drove in runs with singles, while freshman Camryn Russo (Holbrook, N.Y.) added an RBI base hit as Mitchell pushed its advantage to 18–0.
Drouin led the Mariners at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Cole added two hits and scored three times, while Clancy finished with two hits and an RBI.
In the circle, DeCicco earned the win after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven. Frager worked the fifth inning in relief and surrendered three runs in her collegiate debut.
Game 2 – Penn State Altoona 6, Mitchell 5 (8 innings)
Penn State Altoona opened the scoring in the first inning when Kara Lansberry singled down the left-field line to drive in Karli Storm for a 1–0 lead. Mitchell answered in the third as Madison Cole tripled and later scored on a groundout by junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) to even the game at 1–1.
The Lions broke the tie in the seventh inning with three runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Audrey Walker that gave Penn State Altoona a 4–1 advantage. Mitchell responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs to knot the game. Battersby delivered an RBI single before senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) followed with a two-run single to center, tying the score at 4–4.
Penn State Altoona regained the lead in the eighth inning when Riley Best doubled home a run and Madison Kennedy added a sacrifice fly to make it 6–4. Mitchell answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Cole grounded out to score Emma Boisseau, but the Mariners were unable to push across the tying run.
Battersby and Drago each drove in two runs to lead Mitchell offensively, while Cole finished 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored.
Drouin went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits over 8.0 innings while striking out one.
