NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team opened up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play at home on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader against Norwich University at Alumni Field. The Mariners were held scoreless in the opener, falling 1-0, before rallying for a 5-2 victory in game two.
The Mariners (4-8, 1-1 GNAC) will return to the diamond on Sunday, March 22, with a home non-conference doubleheader against the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
Game 1 – Norwich 1, Mitchell 0
In a pitcher's duel throughout, the lone run of the game came in the sixth inning when Norwich pushed across an unearned run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ellie Laroche.
Mitchell matched Norwich with five hits but was unable to capitalize offensively. Junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.), senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.), junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.), sophomore Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.), and junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Cali.) each recorded a hit for the Mariners.
DeCicco was strong in the circle despite the tough-luck loss, allowing just one unearned run on five hits over a complete game while walking two.
Norwich's Madison DeCota earned the shutout, striking out four.
Game 2 – Mitchell 5, Norwich 2
After being held scoreless through the first three innings, the Mariners broke through with a five-run fourth inning to take control. Senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) started the rally with an RBI double, and junior Madison Cole (Westbrook, ME) followed with a two-run double to extend the lead. Arianna Drouin added an RBI double of her own, Olivia DeCicco capped the inning by reaching on an error that brought home another run.
Mitchell finished with six hits in the contest, with Drago leading the way with two hits and an RBI. Drouin, DeCicco, and Cole each contributed doubles, while Cole drove in a team-high two runs.
Drouin also earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on four hits.
Norwich scored its lone run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Jessica Zalucki.
