DURHAM, N.C. – Mitchell College opened the 2022 baseball season with a doubleheader split at William Peace University on Saturday afternoon at Durham Athletic Park.
The Mariners lost 7-5 on a walk-off homer in the first game but bounced back for a 12-3 win in the nightcap. Matt Falk went 5-for-8 with a double, homer and three RBI to pace the offense on the day.
Mitchell (1-1 overall) will wrap up the weekend with a nine-inning game at William Peace on Sunday, February 20 at noon.
Game 1 – William Peace 7, Mitchell 5
In their first action of the season, the Mariners built a 3-0 lead behind an RBI single by Owen Robbins in the third inning and an RBI single by Steve Cochrane in the fourth. The Pacers cut into the deficit with two runs in the home half of the fourth and then pulled ahead 4-3 in the fifth.
Mitchell regained the lead in the sixth thanks to a two-run double by John-John Jose, who finished with three hits in the game. Lelo Martinez and Falk—who each had a pair of hits—set the table with singles.
The Mariners took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh with starter Camren Varney still on the hill. He stuck out the first batter of the inning but then gave up a walk and a single to put the winning run on base. Logan Barbour ended the game with a walk-off homer, his first of the season.
Varney surrendered seven runs on eight hits and struck out nine over 6.1 innings.
Game 2 Mitchell 12, William Peace 3
After heating up in the first game, Mitchell's bats were ready to go in the nightcap. The Mariners pushed across runs in every inning and finished with 14 hits, six of which went for extra bases.
An RBI double by Hunter Yaworski yielded the game's first run in the first. After falling behind 2-1, the Mariners tied the game in the second on an RBI single by Angel Galindez and took a 4-2 lead in the third thanks to a two-run homer by Falk.
Dougie DelaCruz added a two-run single in the fourth to pad the lead to 6-3, and Robbie DelaCruz plated a run in the fifth on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Falk doubled in another run in the sixth, and Martinez and Bo Yaworski each tacked on two-run singles in the seventh.
Chris Gibbs made his collegiate debut on the mound and tossed 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while fanning two. Daniel Driscoll picked up the win in relief, throwing 4.0 scoreless innings and striking out five.
