Lalli & Ficocelli Earn All-Region Honors from D3baseball.com
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Two members of the Mitchell College baseball team earned All-Region honors from D3baseball.com on Tuesday morning when the popular website released their All-Region teams. The 2024 season marks the 12th season that D3baseball.com has named All-Region teams, with more than 1,000 players nominated. The ballot was then made available to D3baseball.com staff and contributors from which three teams in each region were determined.
Representing the Mariners were senior Cole Lalli (Coventry, Conn.), who secured one of the three outfield slots on the All-Region Region 1 First Team, while freshman Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) locked down the designated hitter spot on the All-Region Region 1 Third Team. It marks the first time in the career of both players that they have been selected to an All-Region Team by D3baseball.com.
Lalli, who was also a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Conference First Team selection, enjoyed a breakout season in which he slashed .381/.446/.645 with a OPS of 1.019, finishing seventh in the conference in batting average and third in slugging percentage. The senior had 59 hits, including 16 doubles, two triples, and seven home runs, while driving in 53 runs and scoring 34 times. Lalli's 53 RBI led the team and was the second most in the GNAC, while his seven homers were third in the conference, his 59 hits ranked fourth, and his 16 doubles were also fourth most. He also led Mitchell and ranked third in the GNAC with 100 total bases and 25 extra base hits.
Lalli hit safely in 35 of 43 games for the Mariners and recorded multiple hits on 15 occasions, including eight games where he collected three or more hits.
A GNAC All-Conference Third Team selection and the GNAC Rookie of the Year, Ficocelli quickly became a mainstay in the Mitchel starting lineup and established himself as one of the more potent bats in New England. The freshman finished third on the team with a .365 batting average, was second with an on-base-percentage of .451, and ranked fifth with a .514 slugging percentage. Ficocelli ranked second in the GNAC with 66 hits and 18 doubles, and finished fourth in triples with three, fifth in total bases with 93, and sixth in runs scored with 43.
After collecting his first collegiate hit on March 9th, Ficocelli was held hitless just four more times during the regular season. He also had 19 multi-hit games and enjoyed a 13 game hit streak which spanned from March 15th through April 7th.
The Mariners captured the GNAC Championship during their inaugural season in the conference and finished with an overall record of 34-13.
