Baseball Falls to Husson in Extra-Inning Marathon
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Husson University baseball team overcame a five-run deficit on Wednesday to pick up an 11-10 12-inning win over Mitchell College in non-conference action at the Russmatt Invitational.
The Eagles trailed 10-5 after a five-run seventh inning for the Mariners, in which junior Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) belted his second homer of the season, a three run shot. Sophomore Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) hit a two-run double during the big seventh inning, while Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) and Michael Gajda (New Britain, Conn.) also had run scoring base hits to push the Mariners ahead by five.
The Eagles battled back scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull within 10-8. Matt Holmes then cut the lead to one with an RBI triple in the eighth and Hunter Curtis doubled to score Holmes to tie the game and force extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th and 11th inning, Husson loaded the bases with no outs to begin the 12th. Cam Rendell then reached on a fielder's choice to first base, allowing Mitchell to get the runner at the plate for the first out of the inning, however Jackson Curtis drove in the winning run on a fielder's choice to shortstop to come away with the 11-10 win.
Ficocelli drove in a game high five runs for the Mariners, finishing with two hits in five at bats, including a double. Junior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) went 4-6 with a run scored, while Sestokas went 2-4 with a three-run homer.
Sophomore Joshua Scamman (Rochester, N.H.) took the loss after surrendering one run across the final three and two third innings of play.
Chris Lusignan was credited with the win, tossing two and two third shutout innings to close out the game.
The Mariners (2-10, 0-0 GNAC) return to the diamond on Thursday, March 13, when they battle nationally ranked Johns Hopkins University at 2:45 pm to continue their spring break trip. The Eagles (4-3, 0-0 NAC) close out their spring break trip on Thursday, March 13, when they battle Marymount University.
