Baseball Powers Past SUNY Cobleskill
LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Mitchell College baseball team continued its strong showing at the Spartan Southern Classic with a 13–4 victory over SUNY Cobleskill on Friday morning at Lexington County Stadium.
The Mariners struck early and never looked back, scoring in the first inning before adding two more runs in the third on a two-run double by senior Johnny Brucato (Cheshire, Conn.). Mitchell broke the game open in the fifth when junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) launched a grand slam to right field, extending the lead to 7–0.
Mitchell added three more runs in the sixth inning as Brucato delivered another two-run double before sophomore Christopher Piscione (Cranston, R.I.) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. The Mariners continued the offensive surge in the seventh when senior Savier Paige (Wethersfield, Conn.) ripped a two-run double and Brucato followed with an RBI triple to push the advantage to 13–3.
The Mariners finished with 14 hits in the contest. Brucato led the offense with three hits, including two doubles and a triple, while driving in five runs and scoring twice. Paige also collected three hits, two RBI, and a pair of runs, while Terni Jr. added two hits and four RBI with his second home run of the spring. Sophomore Ryan Dennis (Ellington, Conn.) scored four runs in the victory.
On the mound, sophomore Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.) earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits over 5.1 innings while striking out two. Junior Lucas Nichols (Alderville First Nation, Canada) worked the final 3.2 innings to secure the save.
Tony Woodie and Cole Platt each drove in runs for the Fighting Tigers, while Connor Mulligan took the loss after surrendering seven runs across five innings of work.
Winners of three straight, the Mariners (5–3, 0–0 GNAC) conclude their spring break trip on Saturday, March 14, when they square off once again against No. 20 Case Western Reserve University. Mitchell routed the Spartans 18–1 earlier in the week. First pitch from Lexington County Stadium is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
