Baseball Explodes for 22 Runs in Home Opener Rout of Clark
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team erupted for a season-high 22 runs in its home opener, rolling past Clark University, 22–8, on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After falling behind 1–0 in the first inning, the Mariners quickly answered with two runs in the second and two more in the third to take control. Mitchell broke the game open in the fourth when senior Savier Paige (Wethersfield, Conn.) launched a three-run home run to extend the lead, and the offense never looked back.
The Mariners continued to pile on, scoring four runs in the fifth, six in the sixth, and five more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Mitchell finished with 14 hits and drew eight walks in the contest. Sophomore Christopher Piscione (Cranston, R.I.) led the offensive charge with three hits, including a triple, and five RBI, while Paige added five RBI of his own, highlighted by his three-run homer. Senior Ryan Dennis (Ellington, Conn.) scored three times and drove in two runs, and junior Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) added a home run and two RBI.
On the mound, senior Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) earned the win, allowing two runs over 3.0 innings. Freshman Andrew Manzo (North Haven, Conn.) provided solid middle relief, and senior Ethan Nichols (Ontario, Canada) closed out the final three innings without allowing a run.
Clark was led by Dom Mariani, who homered and drove in a run, while Brayden Hollinrake added a double and two RBI. The Cougars mounted a five-run seventh inning, but the Mariners responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half to cap the scoring.
The Mariners (6–4, 0–0 GNAC) will play one more game before opening Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, hosting Nichols College on Thursday, March 19, at 3:00 p.m.
