Baseball Drops Home Contest to Nichols
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team dropped an 8–1 decision to Nichols College on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
Nichols broke the game open in the third inning, scoring four runs on a series of timely hits to take control early. Mitchell answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning when senior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) delivered an RBI single to score sophomore Ryan Dennis (Ellington, Conn.), but the Mariners were unable to generate further offense.
The Bison added two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to extend the lead.
Mitchell finished with seven hits in the contest, with junior Will Estronza (New Britain, Conn.) leading the way with two hits. Miller Jr. drove in the lone run, while Dennis scored Mitchell's only run of the game.
On the mound, freshman Alex Ramos (Middletown, Conn.) took the loss, allowing two runs over 2.1 innings. Junior Lucas Nichols (Alderville First Nation, Canada) provided a strong outing in relief, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings.
Nichols was led by Ryan Keating, who collected three hits and drove in a run, while Collin Harty added two RBI.
The Mariners (6–5, 0–0 GNAC) will open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a pair of games against New England College on Saturday, March 21. First pitch in the opening game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
