All Mariners Advance on First Day of NECC Men's Tennis Championship


PAWCATUCK, Conn. - All seven members of the Mitchell College men's tennis team who were competing at this weekend's NECC Championship advanced to the finals on Saturday afternoon at the Stonington High School Tennis Courts.

The Mariners will be represented at every singles and doubles position in the finals. Lesley University, Becker College and Newbury College also had players advance to tomorrow’s final day after winning their respective flights in the semifinals.

All the number one seeds defeated all the number four seeds today. Only two upsets occurred in the tournament, both in singles action.  In the No. 3 singles flight, fourth-seeded sophomore Benjamin Weiner of Newbury defeated the third-seeded freshman Alex Zhitnik from Lesley 7-6, 6-1 with a 6-2 tie-breaker. In the No. 6 singles flight, fourth-seeded freshman Branden Parkhouse from Becker overtook third-seeded junior Tyler Reeves of Lesley 6-4 and 5-3 after Reeves retired.

Tomorrow’s final matches will take place at Stonington High School with a 10:30 a.m. start for doubles. All winners of the final matches will be awarded 2010 NECC All-Tournament awards.
