Men's Tennis Sweeps Final NECC Weekly Honors
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – For the fifth time this season and the
third straight week, two members of the Mitchell College
men’s tennis team swept weekly conference honors, as
announced by the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) on
Monday.
Sophomore Kyle Carmona was named NECC Player of the Week while
freshman Rocco Devona was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. Both
earn the honors for the fifth and final time this season, as the
pair each won singles and doubles titles over the weekend at the
2010 NECC Men’s Tennis Championship.
Carmona won two matches at the No. 1 flight to win his second
consecutive title. He defeated Wheelock’s Wilson Chang (6-0,
6-3) in semifinal action and Becker’s Charles Heard (6-4,
6-2) in the final. Carmona, who earned a spot on the All-Tournament
Team, finished the season undefeated in singles play with an 11-0
record.
Devona took home conference honors for the sixth straight week. He
finished the 2010 campaign with an undefeated 12-0 record in
singles and won the No. 2 flight to earn All-Tournament status.
Devona defeated Wheelock’s Robert Venning (6-3, 6-0) in the
semis and Lesley’s Nick Mattox (6-2, 6-1) in the finals en
route to the title.
In doubles action of the 2010 Championship, Carmona and Devona
sailed through the semifinals (6-0, 6-2) and finals (6-1, 6-0) to
take home the No. 1 title. The duo earned All-Tournament status and
improved to 11-0 on the season at the top doubles position.
Mitchell (10-0 overall) went undefeated for the second straight
season and repeated as NECC champions. The Mariners also took eight
of the nine titles over the weekend at the NECC Championship.
