Women's Tennis Falls 7-2 to Lesley
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's tennis
team dropped a conference match to Lesley University on Thursday
afternoon by a 7-2 final at the Mitchell College Tennis Courts.
Lesley (3-1 overall, 2-1 NECC) won two of three doubles contests to
get off to an early lead before posting victories at five singles
spots. Mitchell (0-6 overall, 0-3 NECC) picked up wins at the top
singles and doubles positions.
Mitchell freshman Mackenzie Flanagan and senior Kelly Walsh battled
to victory at No. 1 doubles in a showdown against Courtney Mullen
and Hagar Memlies. The 90-minute match ended by tiebreaker, with
the Mitchell pair triumphing by a 9-8 (7-4) final.
Lesley's Michelle Side and Katie Side led 4-0 at No. 2
doubles before an injury on the Mitchell side forced the Mariners
to retire. The team of Nicole Smith and Brenna Donovan had no
problem at the No. 3 spot, winning 8-0 for the Lynx.
Flanagan also earned the Mariners' lone singles point at the
No. 1 spot, outlasting Mullen in a three-set marathon by scores of
6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3). Flanagan improved to 5-1 in singles play on
the season.
Lesley won the remaining singles matches in straight sets. The Lynx
picked up the point at No. 6 singles by virtue of a forfeit.
Mitchell returns to conference play at Newbury College on Saturday,
September 25 at noon.
