Newbury Tops Women's Tennis 7-2
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's tennis
team suffered a 7-2 defeat at the hands of Newbury College on
Thursday afternoon at the Mitchell College Tennis Courts.
The Nighthawks (4-7 overall, 2-5 NECC) won two of three doubles
points before cementing the victory by taking five out of six
singles matches. Alex Derderian, Julie MacLeod and Stephanie Ruffin
each secured wins in both doubles and singles action to lead the
Newbury charge.
Mitchell's two points came at No. 1 doubles and singles.
Freshman Mackenzie Flanagan and senior Kelly Walsh picked up their
third conference victory of the season by an 8-5 final over the duo
of Kristen Connors and Stephanie Valentine. Flanagan then carried
that momentum into singles play, outlasting Jennifer Swafford in
three sets to win 6-0, 5-7, 6-1.
The only other singles match that went to a third set was at the
No. 3 spot, where Valentine dropped the first set to junior Lauren
Rowley before rallying back for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory. Connors
also picked up a straight sets victory over Walsh at No. 2 by
finals of 6-2, 6-0.
Mitchell (0-10 overall, 0-6 NECC) will next host Bay Path College
on Friday, October 8 at 3:30 p.m.
