Women's Tennis Earns First Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's tennis team
earned its first win of the season on Sunday morning, posting a 6-3
victory over Saint Joseph College at the Mitchell College Tennis
Courts.
The Mariners (1-12 overall) rallied to avenge a loss suffered
earlier this season to the Blue Jays (4-7 overall). Mitchell won
two out of three doubles matches for the first time all season to
take a 2-1 lead into the singles portion of the event. The Mariners
then picked up four points in singles action to secure the
match.
Senior captain Kelly Walsh led the
way for the Mariners in the final home match of her career. She
teamed with freshman Mackenzie Flanagan to earn a point at No. 1
doubles, posting an 8-3 win over Alicia Lienhop and Gianna Gurga.
She then won her first singles match of the season in straight sets
over Gurga (7-5, 6-4) at the No. 2 spot.
The doubles team of sophomores Caitlin Brown and
Julie Embley
also earned their first victory of the season. Playing at the No. 3
spot, the Mitchell duo defeated April Loteczka and Angela Zaffetti
by an 8-4 final.
Brown, along with senior Ashley Boutin and
junior Lauren
Rowley, earned points in singles play. Rowley's win over
Loteczka at the No. 5 spot clinched the winning point for the
Mariners.
For the Blue Jays, Kameshia Cooper and Shawanna Jefferson won at
No. 2 doubles. Cooper then earned a singles point at the No. 3 spot
while Leinhop took a point off Flanagan at the top position.
Mitchell will close out the regular season with a non-conference
match at Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, October 13 at 3:30
p.m.
