STANDISH, ME – The Mitchell College women's soccer team fell by a final of 2-1 to Saint Joseph's College (ME) on Saturday afternoon in a GNAC tilt at the SJC Athletics Complex.
Senior Francesca Zamarripa (Lithia, Fla.) collected her first goal of the fall for the Mariners, while junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) picked up the assist.
The Monks jumped ahead early on a goal by Sydney Gallop in the 13th minute of play. SJC tacked on more goal just before halftime when Bridget Davis converted on a penalty kick opportunity to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the home squad. Zamarripa's goal, which trimmed the deficit to one, came early in the 68th minute, but it was all the offense the Mariners could muster, as they were outshot 29-1 on the day. The Monks also held a 4-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Mitchell senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) racked up 16 saves on 18 shots on goal, marking the fourth time in five games this season in which she has tallied double-digit saves. Ashlyn Guerrette surrendered one goal for the Monks on the lone shot she faced.
The Mariners (0-5, 0-5 GNAC) will look for their first GNAC victory of the season when they host Dean College on Wednesday, September 25, at 2:00 pm. Fresh off their first win of the fall, the Monks (1-5, 1-3 GNAC) return to action when they play at Lasell University on Monday, September 23.
