Women’s Volleyball Picks Up First GNAC Win
NORTHFIELD, VT. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play in strong fashion on Wednesday night, sweeping Norwich University 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-17) inside Andrews Hall. The win pushed the Mariners to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Mitchell's balanced attack and steady serving proved to be the difference, as four different players tallied multiple kills and the team combined for 11 service aces.
Freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) led the charge with a team-high seven kills on an efficient .316 hitting percentage while also handing out seven assists. Sophomores Genna Hyde (Cypress,, TX) and Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) chipped in six kills apiece, while senior Ali Ortiz (Groton, Conn.) added five kills to round out the offensive effort.
Defensively, the Mariners were anchored by senior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.), who posted a match-best 15 digs to go along with five aces from the service line. Jenna Blankenship (Viren, IL) steered the offense with nine assists while contributing three aces and eight digs.
Mitchell edged Norwich in a back-and-forth opening set before seizing momentum. The Mariners hit .188 in the second frame while holding the Cadets to a negative percentage, then closed out the sweep with another decisive 25-17 win in the third.
Overall, Mitchell out-dug Norwich 56-44 and limited the Cadets to a -.052 hitting percentage on the night.
The Mariners (2-1, 1-0 GNAC) return to New London for their home opener on Saturday, September 6, when they host a tri-match with Mass. Maritime and the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
