NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph women's volleyball team came away with a 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-10, 25-13, 25-14) over Mitchell College on Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Blue Jays (2-2 overall) dropped the first set but came back in convincing fashion to capture the next three. Tiffany Mapusaga led all players with 18 kills while Ciara Perez and Cassandra Grimaldi added eight and seven, respectively. Megan Williams handed out 29 assists while Emily Vigue and Mapusaga each recorded 10 digs.
Amanda Garcia led the Mariners (2-2 overall) with nine kills. Classmate Nicole Caminiti finished with 16 assists while Kaisea Caramante added a match-high 20 digs.
Mitchell was strong in the first set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead behind back-to-back kills from Garcia and Janelle Rice. The Mariners stayed in front until Saint Joseph grabbed its first lead at 14-13 on service ace from Mapusaga, the first of three straight aces for the junior. Mitchell later rallied to tie the game at 19-19 before Italia Krick served out the final six points to clinch the set.
The Blue Jays made quick work of the second set, winning 12 of the final 13 points in a 25-10 final. Mapusaga led the way with five kills in the stanza while the Perez and Grimaldi combined for five more.
Mapusaga added six kills in the third set and five in the fourth to round out her big night. She also finished with a match-high five service aces as the Blue Jays held a commanding 15-2 advantage in the category.
Mitchell will next play at Wesleyan University on Friday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m. Saint Joseph returns to action at home against Simmons College on Saturday, September 13 at 1 p.m.
