NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the Mariners were swept in straight sets by both Simmons University and Regis College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Mariners (5-3, 1-2 GNAC) return to action on Thursday, September 18, when they visit Rhode Island College for a non-conference match at 6 p.m.
Match 1 – Simmons 3, Mitchell 0
Mitchell's five-match win streak was halted despite a strong effort from sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, Texas). Hyde led the Mariners with 12 kills, seven digs, and a solo block to finish with a team-high 13 points.
Freshman Miranda Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added three kills and a service ace, while fellow freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) chipped in three kills and six digs. Senior Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) directed the offense with nine assists to go along with a service ace and four digs, and senior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) anchored the back row with a team-best 14 digs.
As a team, Mitchell finished with 25 kills, 23 assists, 38 digs, and four service aces.
Simmons (2-7, 2-0 GNAC) was led by Hannah Pridgeon with 14 kills and 15.5 points. The Sharks hit .258 as a team while limiting Mitchell to .083.
Match 2 – Regis 3, Mitchell 0
The Mariners pushed the Pride to the brink in the second and third sets but couldn't close out the rallies. Jenkins turned in a strong offensive performance, finishing with seven kills on a .778 hitting percentage while also contributing five assists. Sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) provided a spark at the net, recording eight kills and nine points.
Hyde added eight kills and a pair of service aces to finish with 10 points. Junior setter Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) handed out seven assists and tallied four aces, while Lent once again paced the defense with a match-high 16 digs.
As a team, the Mariners totaled 28 kills, 25 assists, 42 digs, and nine service aces.
Regis (4-5, 2-0 GNAC) was led by Grace Fabiano with 11 kills, while setter Alexandra Rivera dished out 35 assists. The Pride hit .348 as a team in the win.
