Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Purchase for Non-Conference Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team turned in a strong all-around performance on Tuesday night, sweeping Purchase College 3-0 in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-14, 25-17, and 25-18.
With the win, the Mariners improved to 6-5 overall (1-3 GNAC), while the Panthers dropped to 1-8 on the season.
Sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, Texas) led the Mitchell attack with a match-high 13 kills, hitting .310 while adding two service aces and nine digs. Sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) chipped in six kills on .308 hitting, and freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) added six kills and a team-best four service aces.
The Mariners controlled the service line throughout the evening, finishing with 12 aces as a team. Senior setter Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) steered the offense with 14 assists, while senior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) anchored the back row with a team-high 12 digs.
Mitchell never trailed in the opening set and used a 9-1 run midway through to create separation on the way to a 25-14 decision. In the second, the Mariners broke open a tight frame behind kills from Hyde and Wordell to pull ahead late, 25-17. The hosts then closed out the sweep with a balanced offensive showing in the third, highlighted by 14 team kills to seal a 25-18 victory.
Mitchell will return to GNAC play on Saturday, September 27, when it hosts Lasell University at 1 p.m.
