WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team concluded Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play by splitting a road tri-match on Saturday afternoon, defeating Elms College 3–1 before falling by the same score to the University of Saint Joseph at James A. Calhoun Gymnasium.
The Mariners (11–13, 3–10 GNAC) will close out the season on Thursday, November 6, with a non-conference road match at Bridgewater State.
Match 1 – Mitchell 3, Elms 1
After dropping a tight opening set, 25–23, Mitchell responded with three straight wins (25–21, 25–22, 25–17), hitting .210 as a team while holding Elms to .091.
Freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) led the Mariners' attack with a match-high 16 kills on .304 hitting, while sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) added 14 kills at a .370 clip. Fellow sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, Texas) contributed 14 kills and 17 total points, and junior setter Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) directed the offense with 23 assists and 17 digs.
Senior Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) chipped in 11 assists and three service aces, while senior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) anchored the back row with a team-high 23 digs.
Defensively, Mitchell finished with 81 digs and limited Elms to a .000 hitting percentage in the final set.
For Elms, Alysha Izquierdo paced the attack with 11 kills, while Angelica Marks and Alejandra Marin added eight apiece. Setter Jaylen Holman tallied 35 assists, and Alyssa Moore led the Blazers with 24 digs.
Match 2 – Saint Joseph (Conn.) 3, Mitchell 1
Mitchell dropped its second match of the day in West Hartford, falling to Saint Joseph (Conn.) 3–1 (18–25, 20–25, 25–16, 22–25). The Mariners hit .218 as a team, while the Blue Jays posted a .230 mark to secure the GNAC win.
Genna Hyde paced the Mitchell offense with a match-high 18 kills on .432 hitting, adding four aces and 22 total points. Cimber Jenkins tallied 11 kills and two block assists, while Molly Wordell chipped in 11 kills and three total blocks.
Kiersten Veenstra recorded 18 assists, six digs, and a service ace, while Jenna Blankenship added 14 assists and one ace. Julia Lent anchored the back row with 19 digs and three service aces.
Mitchell finished with 59 digs and nine service aces as a team.
For Saint Joseph, Avery Fitzgerald and Shaye Harris each registered 11 kills, while Sofia Weiss added eight. Setter Gabi Wanner guided the Blue Jays' offense with 36 assists and four aces, and Emilia Dugas posted 15 digs and nine kills.
