Baseball Falls to Johnson & Wales, 5-4
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball squad fell in a close non-conference game this afternoon to Johnson & Wales, 5-4. Paul Martinez (New London, Conn.) had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Andrew Langlais (Ledyard, Conn.) when the distance on the mound and took the loss.
The Mariners drew first blood in the game, as they scored a run in the bottom of the first inning off of two errors by the Wildcats. They would not score again until the fourth inning, when James Gleason (Old Lyme, Conn.) hit a sac fly to score Langlais who had reached on an error.
The Wildcats scored three runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI double by Cory Ryan (Dracut, Mass.). The visiting team would score one more run in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. Mitchell then put together a rally and scored two runs to close the gap on singles by Matt Hagan (Boulder, Colo.) and John Migliaccio (Mahopcac, N.Y.) and a double by Martinez. But Johnson & Wales held on for the 5-2 win, and they improved to 8-5 on the season.
For the Mariners, Hagan finished 3-for-4 at the plate, and Gleason was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Langlais gave up five runs on nine hits and struckout four. Nick Marine (Bristol, R.I.) earned the win for Johnson & Wales, as he went seven innings and gave up two runs. The Wildcats were charged with six errors on the day, while Mitchell only committed one.
The Mariners (4-10, 1-1 NECC) are back in action on Saturday, April 4th when they host NECC opponent Southern Vermont College at noon.
