Baseball Loses Two to John Jay College

NEW LONDON, Conn. (3-21-09)- The Mitchell Mariners lost both games of a doubleheader played this afternoon against John Jay College.  Jared Bishop (Moodus, Conn.) had a productive afternoon, hitting two 3-run homeruns, but it wasn't enough to lift the Mariners past the Bloodhounds.

In the first game, John Jay was led by outfielder James Podlucky (Staten Island, N.Y.) who went 3-for-4 at the plate and had 2 RBI's.  John Massoni (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 2-4, and Xavier Perez (Bronx, N.Y.) went 1-1 with 2 RBI's and 2 stolen bases in the win.  Winning pitcher, Michael Colletta (Staten Island, N.Y.), went 5 2/3 innings and gave up four earned runs, six hits, and struck out seven Mariner batters.  Joining Bishop with hitting statistics was Andy Langlais (Ledyard, Conn.) who went 2-for-4 at the plate.  Jeremy Chapman (Waterford, Conn.) took the loss for Mitchell (2-5), as he gave up six hits, five earned runs while striking out four.

The second game of the doubleheader was much of the same, as John Jay jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  The Bloodhounds took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, when the bats came alive for the home team.  Bishop hit his second 3-run dinger of the day to even the game at five.  John Jay would go on to score a run in the top of the ninth inning , and they were able to retire the side in the bottom of the ninth for their second win of the day.

In game two, Paul Martinez (New London, Conn.) went 3-for5 at the plate and had one RBI, while teammate Jeff Perillo went 2-for-4 and scored a run.  Cody Faddis (Muskogee, Okla.) took the loss for the Mariners, whileMassoni picked up the win as he struck out 10 batters.

John Jay's record is now 3-12, while Mitchell fell to 2-6 on the season with the loss.  Mitchell is back in action on Thursday, March 26th when they host Albertus Magnus at 3:00 pm.
