Baseball Sweeps Weekly Conference Honors
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Three members of the Mitchell College
baseball team earned weekly conference honors on Monday, as
announced by the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC).
Junior infielder Jeff Perillo was named NECC Player of the Week
while senior Jeremy Chapman was tabbed NECC Pitcher of the
Week. Freshman pitcher Garrett
Cornwell was also selected as the NECC Rookie of the Week,
completing the sweep of weekly accolades by the Mariners.
Perillo earned POW status for the second straight week. He led the
Mariners to a 2-0 week with wins over Lyndon State College by 9-0
and 7-2 finals. Perillo, who batted .571 with five RBI over the two
games, had four hits including a double and a triple. He also had a
1.000 slugging percentage for the week and didn’t commit an
error in the field.
Chapman pitched the first game of the doubleheader against Lyndon
State and was virtually unhittable. He hurled a complete game
shut-out, allowing only one hit in the 9-0 win. Chapman fanned a
season-high nine batters and didn’t issue a walk, and he also
didn’t allow a runner past second base. He hasn’t given
up an earned run in 13.0 innings of work this season.
Cornwell pitched the second game of the doubleheader and gave the
Mariners six strong innings in the 7-2 victory. He allowed two runs
on three hits and struck out a career-high nine batters while
walking five. Cornwell, who improved to 2-0 on the season, is the
second Mitchell player to earn ROW status this season.
Mitchell (4-5 overall) returns to action on Wednesday, March 31 for
a single game at Johnson & Wales University at 3:30 p.m.
