Mitchell Baseball Sweeps NECC Weekly Awards
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Three members of the Mitchell College baseball team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday morning.
Junior Will Charkowsky was named NECC Player of the Week while classmate Tyler Shultis was tabbed NECC Pitcher of the Week. Freshman Drew Doyle completed the sweep of the weekly awards by being named NECC Rookie of the Week. All three earned distinction for the first time this season.
Charkowsky had a hit in all five games last week and helped the Mariners post a 3-1 record in NECC play. The junior catcher hit .322 (7-for-22) at the plate and finished with four RBI and three runs scored on the week, including three RBI in the series sweep of Southern Vermont College which were all one-run victories for the Mariners.
Shultis pitched in all four conference games last week and posted a pair of wins. He made relief appearances in all three games against Southern Vermont and allowed only two hits over a combined 4.1 innings of work, earning both wins in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Mountaineers.
Doyle, an outfielder, batted a team-high .400 over the five games last week. He had three hits and a pair of RBI in the series finale against Southern Vermont and also had two hits and two RBI in a non-conference game against Coast Guard.
Charkowsky started all 28 games for the Mariners and batted .337 with 14 RBI and a team-high 20 runs scored this season. Shultis finished the year with a 2-2 overall record and posted a 4.43 ERA in 20.1 innings of service. Doyle played in 27 games and batted .319 with 18 RBI and 16 runs scored. In 17 conference games he led the Mariners with a .444 batting average and finished with 11 RBI and 12 runs scored.
Mitchell completed the regular season with a dramatic sweep of Southern Vermont, winning all three games in walk-off fashion. The Mariners finished with a 10-18 overall record and tied for fourth in the NECC with a 9-9 mark.
