Recap From 2012 Athletics Awards Banquet

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College Department of
Athletics honored its student-athletes at the annual end of the
year banquet on Thursday at the Weller Center.
All 14 Mitchell athletics programs were represented and over 150
student-athletes attended the event, which revisited the highlights
from the 2011-12 season. Several awards were also presented during
the evening, though the five major awards will be announced at the
Senior Banquet on Friday, May 11.
Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society
The 2012 induction class of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society was
also recognized. Jennie Austin (women's volleyball), Rocco
Devona (men's tennis), Malorie Klieber (women's soccer), Tiffany
Person (softball), Rebecca Tabak (women's soccer, women's
basketball), Nicole Terni (women's volleyball) and Arianna Thomas
(women's volleyball) were all inducted.
The mission of Chi Alpha Sigma is to bring honor and recognition to
deserving student-athletes, their families, teams, athletic
departments and colleges. To be considered for induction
student-athletes must be a junior with a 3.4 cumulative GPA,
possess good moral character and must earn a letter in a varsity
sport.
Sportsmanship Award
Presented to a member of each team who demonstrates the true
meaning of sportsmanship.

Michael Jenkins Award – For the Love of the Game
Award: Blaze Ianetti
This award is given each year to a baseball player who, through
determination and love for the game, has overcome life’s
adversities and has become a member of the Mitchell College
Baseball Team. It is given in memory of Michael T. Jenkins II, who
died in a car accident in June of 1995. Michael attended Mitchell
from 1994-1995 and was a member of the baseball team in the spring
of 1995.
Top Male Scholar Athlete: Dustin Huguenin,
Men’s Soccer (3.93 GPA, sport management)
Top Female Scholar Athlete: Rebecca Tabak,
Women’s Soccer & Basketball (3.80 GPA, human
development)
The award goes to the sophomore, junior or senior male/female
athlete who has completed two seasons of competition with the
highest cumulative GPA through December 2010.
Top Freshman Male Athlete: Rafael
Garcia, Baseball (3.78 GPA, sport management)
Top Freshman Female Athlete: Jennifer Schmidt,
Women’s Tennis (4.0 GPA, early childhood
education)
The award goes to the freshman male/female athlete who has the
highest cumulative GPA through December 2010.
Scholar Athletes
Mitchell College Athletics established the Scholar Athlete
Program in 2006. The program is designed to recognize the academic
achievements of our student-athletes who achieve a grade point
average of 3.0 or above. This year 86 student-athletes earned the
honor.
