Honors Handed Out at the 2012 Mitchell Athletics Senior Banquet

GROTON, Conn. – The Mitchell College Department of Athletics
honored its largest graduating senior class on Friday at the annual
Senior Banquet.
A total of 160 people attended the event held at the Mystic
Marriott, enjoying an evening that included a cocktail hour and a
three-course meal. Director of Athletics Maureen White then
introduced the 33 seniors in attendance, and the evening concluded
with special awards being presented to six members of the
class.
All 13 Mitchell athletics programs were represented and over 140
student-athletes attended the event, which revisited the highlights
from the 2010-11 season. Several awards were also presented during
the evening.
Seniors Shannen Pelletier, Dustin Huguenin and Adam Grillo were the
recipients of the Alumni Excellence Award. The award is given
annually to the man and woman graduates recommended by the
Department of Athletics who achieved the highest degree of
competence in sports while also attaining outstanding academic
records.
Pelletier was a two-sport athlete who was a midfielder on the
women's soccer team and an outfielder on the softball team. A
four-year starter on the pitch and team captain in her final two
seasons, she was a two-time NECC All-Tournament Team selection and
helped the Mariners to a conference title and NCAA appearance in
2010. She started and played in 56 career games and finished with
six goals and four assists for 16 points. In softball she was a
three-year starter and earned NECC All-Conference Second Team
honors this past season. She finished her career as a six-time NECC
Academic All-Conference Team selection, was a member of Chi Alpha
Sigma and was a four-time Mitchell Scholar Athlete.
Huguenin, a sport management major with a 3.93 GPA, was a two-year
letterwinner and captain as a midfielder on the men's soccer team.
He was named to the NECC All-Conference Second Team in 2010 and
played in 25 career games with three goals and four assists for 10
points. He was also a two-time NECC Academic All-Conference Team
selection, a member of Chi Alpha Sigma and a two-time Mitchell
Scholar Athlete.
Grillo was a four-year letterwinner and three-time team co-captain
on the men's lacrosse team. He led the Mariners in scoring in his
final three seasons and finished his career as the school’s
all-time leading scorer with 103 goals and 35 assists for 138
points. He also owns the school single season records for goals
(42) and points (56). As a junior, he ranked 10th in the nation in
goals per game and 20th in points per game. Grillo was also a
three-time Mitchell Scholar Athlete.
Seniors Tommy Derosier and Nikki Hoxie received the Wilbur Baratz
Award. The award was established in memory of Mr. Baratz, an avid
tennis player, by his widow, and is given annually to the man and
women considered the best all-around athlete in the varsity sports
program.
Derosier was a two-sport athlete who was a four-year letterwinner
on the men's soccer team and a two-year letterwinner on the
baseball team. On the pitch he played in 65 career games and made
58 starts, recording seven goals and eight assists for 22 points.
In baseball he was a two-year starter who earned NECC
All-Conference First Team in 2012. The criminal justice major
played in 53 career games and made 50 starts while batting .284
with 27 RBI and 24 runs scored.
Hoxie, a physical education major, is a repeat winner of the Wilbur
Baratz Award. A four-year starter in both soccer and softball, she
was a three-time all-conference selection on the pitch and was
named NECC Player of the Year in 2010. She led the Mariners to a
conference title and NCAA appearance that same year, and in 70
career games she recorded 38 goals and 22 assists for 98 points. In
softball she was a four-year starter and two-time all-conference
selection at second base who played in 141 career games. She
wrapped up her career with a lifetime batting average of .292 with
68 RBI and 127 runs scored. She also added 50 stolen bases to a
career hit total of 123 that included 16 doubles, two triples and
two homers.
Senior T.J. White took home the final major award of the evening.
The Coaches Trophy is awarded to the person who contributes most to
the varsity athletics by helping to promote excellence in all
varsity sports. White was a manager for the men's soccer and men's
basketball teams in his four years at Mitchell. He also volunteered
his time around the department of athletics in a number of roles,
helping out whenever and wherever needed.
