Macca Named Head Women's Basketball & Head Softball Coach
NEW LONDON, CT, July 21, 2009-Mitchell College Director of
Athletics, Mo White, announced the appointment of Bernadette Macca
as head coach of the women's basketball and softball programs.
Macca, who served as the Mitchell College Sports Information
Director, brings with her sixteen years of collegiate coaching and
playing experience at the Division III level.
"Her extensive knowledge of NCAA Division III athletics as well as
her comprehensive experience both as a collegiate athlete and as a
coach will only enhance Mitchell's programs. We are excited to hire
a coach of Bern's caliber to lead our women's basketball and
softball programs this year. With Mitchell's recent appointment as
a full-fledge member of the NCAA Division III, Bern brings with her
the knowledge and experience necessary to build a competitive
Division III program. Bern's successful career as both a collegiate
athlete and coach will serve as a tremendous role model for our
female student athletes," says White.
When asked about this appointment, Macca said, "I am absolutely
thrilled to have the opportunity to coach the women's
basketball and softball programs at Mitchell College. This is
a very exciting time for the Mitchell College Athletic Department.
I am so grateful and happy to be a member of this department as our
athletic program continues to grow and develop into a competitive
NCAA DIII program."
Macca began her coaching career at Division II Bloomsburg
University. She was hired as a graduate assistant at Elmira College
for the basketball and softball teams in 1999. During her
tenure at Elmira, the women's basketball team qualified for the
NCAA tournament and made an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen. Macca
was hired to start the softball program at Wells College where she
earned conference Coach of the Year honors. She returned to
Elmira to take over the field hockey and lacrosse programs.
In her four-year tenure at Elmira, Macca was twice named Empire 8
Coach of the Year.
As a native of Stonington, Connecticut, Macca earned All-ECC honors
in tennis, basketball and softball at Stonington High School. She
went on to play basketball and lacrosse at Connecticut College
where she reached her 1,000-point milestone and finished her career
as the third all time leading scorer in Connecticut College Women's
Basketball history. She was also named Regional All-American goalie
for lacrosse.
Macca graduated from Connecticut College with a bachelor's degree
in psychology and holds a master's degree in education from Elmira
College. In addition to her coaching duties, Macca will be the SAAC
and Champs/Life Skills facilitator for Mitchell College.
Mitchell College, a member of the NCAA Division III, is made
up of 13 competitive teams including Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer,
Women's Volleyball, Golf, Men's & Women's Cross Country, Men's
Basketball, Women's Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Men's Lacrosse,
Women's Tennis, Men's Tennis, and Sailing. In 2008, Mitchell
College became a founding member of the newly formed New England
Collegiate Conference (NECC). The College is also a member of the
Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC). The ECAC is the
nation's largest athletic conference and only multi-divisional
conference, with 321 member institutions ranging across 16 states
