ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Two members of the Mitchell College men's tennis team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday morning.
Mitchell College junior Rocco Devona was selected as NECC Player of the Week while freshman Rajan Bawa was named NECC Rookie of the Week. Devona earned the honor for the third time this season (April 2, 16) while Bawa received recognition for the second time (April 9). The duo helped the Mariners to their fourth straight NECC title last week.
Devona went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles play at the 2012 NECC Men's Tennis Championship on his way to being named tournament MVP. In singles play at the No. 2 position, the junior dropped only one game in the semifinals against Becker and two games in the finals against Regis. He also teamed with Bawa at No. 1 doubles to post an 8-1 win over Becker and rallied from a 6-3 deficit against Regis to win 8-6.
Bawa went a combined 3-1 in singles and doubles in the championship. He picked up a pair of wins at the top doubles spot alongside Devona and split matches at No. 1 singles. He dropped only one game in a straight sets win over Becker in the semifinals before losing a closely-contested match against Regis in the finals.
Devona finished the season with an 11-0 record in singles play and an 11-1 mark in doubles. Bawa completed his rookie season with an 8-2 record at the top singles spot and went undefeated in doubles at 10-0.
Mitchell finished the season with a team record of 12-2 overall and 9-1 in NECC play. The Mariners won the 2012 NECC Men's Tennis Championship by a 7-2 final over Regis College on April 28.
