Mens Hoops Win Close Game at CCNY
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Mitchell had four players score double digits, with Eric Murray (Bridgeport, Conn.) leading the way with a game-high 26 points and 8 rebounds in a 84-82 road victory at CCNY on Monday evening. Jenel Russell (East Hampton, N.Y.) had a strong performance in the paint with 21 points, 14 boards, and five blocks. Mike DePaolo (Asbury, N.J) netted 16 points, while Josh Witt (New London, Conn.) played a solid all-around game with 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and only one turnover.
CCNY was led by Brandon Mellete (New York, N.Y.) and Xavier Gonzalez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who both scored 17 points, and Gonzalez contributed 14 rebounds and five blocks in the losing effort.
The Mariners jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, and stayed in front of the Beavers for all but one minute of the first half. The score at the break was 41-30; and Mitchell maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half, until CCNY used a 14-5 run including three three-pointers in the final :59 of play to make the game interesting. The visiting squad was able to hit clutch free throws (5-of-6) in the last :38 of play to secure the victory.
Mitchell improves to 3-4 on the season, while CCNY falls to 0-7. The Mariners close out the first semester with their home-opener on Wednesday, December 10th against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 8:00 pm. CCNY is back in action on December 13, 2008 at home against SUNY Purchase.
